The Royal Elephant
IDOL IS MADE ON THE DRY TEAK WOOD (SAAGWAN).Sagwan wood (Indian teak) acts as the foundational core for silver furniture because it provides the necessary
heavy-duty structural strength, termite resistance, and longevity required to securely support heavy silver.
The sculpture features a grand, exceptionally detailed silver sculpture of a ceremonial royal elephant (Ambavari elephant). The elephant is depicted in a standing posture,
outfitted with a traditional rider, a flag, and lavishly decorated ceremonial armor.
Description
1. The Royal Elephant
Anatomy & Posture: The elephant is captured standing firmly on all four legs, facing toward the right side of the frame. It features a smooth, highly polished silver
body that beautifully reflects the light. It has long, upturned tusks and a trunk that curves gently downward.
Head Decorations : The forehead and the upper part of the trunk are covered in an intricate cap of heavily engraved silver filigree. Large, highly
stylized ornamental panels rest right over its ears, and a multi-layered, fringed decorative collar drapes heavily beneath its neck.
Body Armor & Blanket: The elephant’s back and flanks are draped in a massive ceremonial blanket. The blanket is split into panels decorated with deeply etched floral
patterns, borders, and traditional geometric motifs. Thick, ornamental cuffs or anklets wrap around its lower legs just above the feet.
2. The Mahout (Rider) and Howdah
The Rider (Mahout): Seated on the neck of the elephant just ahead of the carriage is a small sculpted male figure representing a driver or royal guard. He is shown
holding a tall flagpole in his left hand. The flag itself is a rigid, triangular silver piece covered in fine scrollwork engraving.
The Howdah (Ambavari): Mounted securely on the elephant’s back is a traditional royal carriage or seat (howdah). It features high, ornately pierced walls at the back
and sides with classical scrollwork cutouts, designed to replicate the look of a royal chariot seat.
