Description
The Peacock Sculpture
Pose: The peacock is depicted standing in a classic, elegant profile view facing toward the right. Its neck is upright and curved gracefully, its long legs support
the body, and its heavy train of tail feathers extends backward and rests along the ground.
Head and Neck: The head features a small, stylized crest consisting of three rounded plumes. It has large, almond-shaped engraved eyes and a sharp beak.
A decorative, banded collar with diagonal rope-like twists adorns the middle of its long neck, dividing the finely stippled texture of the upper neck from the breast.
Body and Plumage Textures: The artisan has utilized different engraving styles to define the bird’s anatomy:
Breast and Torso: Covered in a dense, scale-like or floral cross-hatch pattern mimicking soft chest feathers.
Wings: The upper folded wing features a layered, scalloped teardrop design.
Tail Train: The long train trailing on the ground is highly detailed, composed of individual overlapping feathers, each intricately etched with the characteristic
“eye” pattern (oscelli) of a peacock’s plumage.
Finish: It features a matte, antique finish. Dark oxidation is purposefully left within the deep grooves and recessed areas of the carvings, which creates stark
shadows and accentuates the complex surface textures
